Yeah! So, we’re officially here! Sort of. Well, so maybe it isn’t quite official yet since this site is pretty much a secret still. And we’re not using our shiny new email addresses on a regular basis. The company registration is still pending. Come to think about it, we’re more here unofficially than anything else.

Since we’re here at-least, a little about the company we’re so unofficially working on.

Allow us to introduce distrop—a place to learn and have fun. A web development company, where “web development” is synonymous with play, and “company” with ground (and we have a thing for separating joined compound nouns).

We have an idea where we start a company that’s not evaluated by monetary measures, but rather by how much the associates learn and how fun we’re having (and mean it). Sounds naive? Well, it’s not like we’re going to be working for free, it’s just that the sterling isn’t the prime motivator.

Our ambition is to keep the company small. Grow a ~five people strong establishment (or something to that effect). Great size for our objectives, keep it nimble. Right now we’re two “multi-disciplinary” developers—Gustaf Sjöberg and Johan Dahlberg—who’ll be laying the ground for the company, get things rolling, the next following couple of months.

Our points of focus

distrop has three major points of focus: creating our own little products and services; help startups start and client-work.

Our ideal project is one that we can keep pretty small, where we have a lot of influence (on everything from choice of technology to decisions on design and concept) and where we can learn something new.

Our own projects will typically spring off from our lab days, or from tools that we have built and use in our daily work. The projects we maintain should be relatively small and we should use them ourselves. It could be anything from a simple movie recommendation engine or a little Firefox extension, to a full fledged knowledge base.

While on that note, “lab days” is one of the concepts that we have here to keep things fun and to keep making progress in new territories. On Wednesdays you’re not allowed to work on things that you normally work on. You can do whatever you want at the office, so long as you learn from it. It doesn’t even have to be computer related (although it more often than not is .. since we’re kind of obsessed). Nothing novel or spectacular about the idea, but it is our firm belief that a real workplace should have at-least one day each week dedicated to exploring the things that keep escaping us due to time constraints!

Helping startups is another way to have fun and stay updated. Have an idea but want to keep angels and VCs out of it, at-least for the moment being? We’ll help you develop that prototype (where prototype is a working system, naturally) for a fraction of market price and an incitement (or just the incitement, if you’re so inclined).

As for clients, we’ll be helping our clients do anything from publishing their company site to building accounting systems and intranets. We typically do straight web stuff, but have been known to create desktop applications and application plugins.

Time’s up

I think that’s about how prolific it gets. Oh, I should probably mention our first venture development project: a cool little music startup that we’re helping with design and implementation of the user interface (we’re also doing some stuff on the back-end side of things). In parallel, we’ll be pushing forward on a few other projects that we have in the pipeline. Keep checking back as new projects will be popping up on the main site regularly.

@Stefan, "waiting, waiting" -- what's up with the double-waiting? Are you implying that I'm slow?

@Björn, you'll receive your check in the beginning of next week. Tsk, tsk.

@Eric, there's a tiny link to a feed containing the latest entries in the footer now.

@Louise, and we have been giving the address to a lucky few. I'm a fraud, I know.

Thank you all!

Finally! I'll be looking forward to see some innovative digital creations. I see you have Gustaf sjöberg in the team, good, very good. Put a leech 'round his neck, tie it to the ceiling and let it be just long enough for him to reach his bowl of water, food and a computer of any sort. After that, it's pretty much down to waiting, waiting and magic will happen. Anywho, good luck with the company, projects and Gustaf!

Congratulations on a long post and starting a company. And to a site that looks fantastic! Even more so considering it's not even official yet!

Will you be adding feeds for projects and blog posts?
